Siena is one of the most beautiful cities in Tuscany and is surrounded by olive groves and the vineyards of Chianti.
Siena is well know for its historic sites and also for the famous 'Palio',
the annual historic horse-races that take place on 2 July and 16 August,
a twice-yearly bareback horse race around the Campo, preceded by days of preparation, medieval pageantry and chicanery.
The race has been held since at least the thirteenth century. Originally it followed a circuit through the town, but since the sixteenth century it has consisted of three laps of the Campo , around a track covered with sand and padded with mattresses to minimize injury to riders and horses (though this does occur, and the Palio is a passionate subject for animal-rights supporters).
There are plenty restaurants, bars and cafes in Siena, local specialities include pici (thick, hand-rolled spaghetti with toasted breadcrumbs), finocchiona (minced pork flavoured with fennel), pappa col pomodoro (bread and tomato soup), and fagioli all'uccelletto (white bean and sausage stew). Siena conserves a tradition in arts and crafts, many markets. A traditional line of workshops in the streets of the town, leather goods makers, ceramic artists and sculptors work, often using techniques handed down for generations. Some of the most popular objects bought as souvenirs are vases, jugs and candle holders. The Santa Lucia Bells, made in terracotta and painted by hand in the colors and stems of the city’s “contrade” that take part in the Palio, are also extremely characteristic.
![]() One of the most famous squares in Siena is the Piazza del Campo, is located where in ancient times was located a Roman forum, this square is more commonly known as "Il Campo" and is surrounded by Medieval Buildings, restaurants, trattorias and open-air coffee shops. Here takes place the famous Palio. The Duomo Square or Piazza del Duomo is located where it was a IX century cathedral named Santa Maria, on the Duomo Square rises the huge majestic Cattedrale dell'Assunta, a splendid example of the Italian Gothic. On the Piazza Salimbeni is the Palazzo Salimbeni, a notable building and also the medieval headquarters of Monte dei Paschi di Siena, one of the oldest banks in continuous existence and a major player in the Senese economy. These are only a few examples of what you can visit in Siena.
