LEARN ITALIAN IN SIENA
Siena is located in Tuscany, Italy, and is the capital city of the province of the same name. Siena has many historical places like: Piazza del Campo, Piazza del Duomo, Piazza dei Salimbeni, Basilica of San Domenico, Fountain of Fontebranda and more, is for this reason that UNESCO has declared the historic center of Sienna a World Heritage Site.
About the city
Siena is one of the most beautiful cities in Tuscany and is surrounded by olive groves and the vineyards of Chianti. Siena is well know for its historic sites and also for the famous 'Palio', the annual historic horse-races that take place on 2 July and 16 August, a twice-yearly bareback horse race around the Campo, preceded by days of preparation, medieval pageantry and chicanery. The race has been held since at least the thirteenth century. Originally it followed a circuit through the town, but since the sixteenth century it has consisted of three laps of the Campo , around a track covered with sand and padded with mattresses to minimize injury to riders and horses (though this does occur, and the Palio is a passionate subject for animal-rights supporters).
There are plenty restaurants, bars and cafes in Siena, local specialities include pici (thick, hand-rolled spaghetti with toasted breadcrumbs), finocchiona (minced pork flavoured with fennel), pappa col pomodoro (bread and tomato soup), and fagioli all'uccelletto (white bean and sausage stew).
