Viareggio town is well known for its carnival, one of the most famous in Italy. Viareggio is located in the province of Lucca situated on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea in the north of Tuscany. This city is very popular today and it was one of the first seaside resorts in Europe.

About the city

Viareggio is easily reached by bus or by train from anywhere in Italy. The city was created in the 16th century, and its name derives from the Latin 'Via Regis' that means 'King's Road', the name of a road built in Middle Ages. Boat excursions are numerous and enjoyable in the large series of lakes in Puccini's Villa.

In Viareggio you'll find an eclectic mix of architectural styles - from art nouveau and art deco through to neo-classical; all of this was started in the 1920's.

The Viareggio Carnival was created based in the idea of making a sunday a little different of the rest, a sunday full of fun and new things, and was invented a procession of decorated floats which travelled up and down the main street of the city. For those days the citizens made a mask protest against the taxes, the parade was a success, it was liked a lot by everyone and since then Viareggio has become the home of the Italian Carnival, with the masked parades that are works of art to which the citizens sometimes dedicates a hole year of workmanship.
